Tips on Welding Aluminium with the DHC 2000 Oxy/Acet Welder
Many of us know that welding aluminum is not easy compared to welding mild steel. The main reason is, during welding, aluminum gets heated up and can melt owing to its low melting point. However, these issues on welding aluminum can be resolved easier using the torch if specific measures are taken appropriately. Hence, some of the essential tips for welding aluminum are given below:
Step-1: Unless very thin, preheat the aluminum metal pieces that have to be welded. Aluminum tends to go out of shape due to localized heating by a welding torch. Therefore, preheating the aluminum will minimize the deformation. Alternatively, preheating the aluminum can be done using an oven with a thermometer instead of using a propane torch to heat the surface.
Step-2: Move the welding torch along the aluminium weld without stopping so as not to cause localized heating of aluminum metal pieces.
Step-3: Set up the welding torch with a neutral flame to ensure an oxygen free environment around the aluminium weld area.
Step-4: Use an aluminium welding rod lightly coated with aluminium welding flux to break through the oxide layer.
Besides above, aluminum is a low density metal used in a wide range of applications. Low density of aluminum is an attractive attribute of aluminum. Similarly, aluminum is a good conductor of heat and electricity. Hence, aluminum is widely used in power generation, heat insulation of appliances preventing heating up of wiring.
Welding aluminum successfully is easy with the DHC 2000’s narrow concentrated flame & due to its lower heat output the welds are pliable unlike TIG or MIG welding equipment.
Finally, to weld safely we recommend that you use the following welder equipment, approved safety glasses, long sleeved shirt or overalls, welding gloves and flashback arrestors and follow all standard safety procedures.
